2020 Crown Point CABERNET SAUVIGNON

98+ POINTS - JEB DUNNUCK

Aged in 50% new and 50% once used French oak, it sports a deep plum/purple hue followed by Saint-Julien like notes of crème de cassis, spicy oak, spring flowers, and smoked tobacco. The real deal, it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, with incredible purity and precision, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Another sensational Bordeaux blend from this team, it has some up-front appeal yet won’t hit maturity for another 7-8 years and will be a 30+ year wine. Bravo!

96 POINTS - WINE ENTHUSIAST

Lovely aromas of black cherry cordial surrounded by chocolate sauce and oak make for a juicy, yet smoky, entry to the nose of this bottling. There are a lot of tactile touch points on the chalky palate, where generous flavors of milk chocolate, cherry sorbet and toasted coconut are held together by a taut structure.

Dark and delicious aromas of black cherry and cassis are lifted by star anise and purple flowers on the cohesive nose of this bottling. There is plenty of that black cherry fruit on the palate as well, but it’s presented in an elegantly restrained way, with rose petals, cocoa dust and crème brûlée flavors all arising by the long finish.

Dark and concentrated in the glass, this bottling immediately reveals an elegantly refined polish. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is outrageously beautiful. Super-ripe black cherry, blackberry, gravel, chocolate, leather, licorice and spice all race out of the glass. The 2017 is heady, explosive and absolutely alluring. It is the most impressive wine I have tasted here so far. Tannins are present, but well integrated.

2016 Crown Point Cabernet Sauvignon

97+ POINTS - JEB DUNNUCK

The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated cuvée is the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (92% Cabernet Sauvignon with tiny amounts of the other varieties on the property). It’s cut from the same cloth as the Estate Selection, yet with just a touch more classic Cabernet blue fruits, purity, and precision. Blackcurrants, cassis, crushed violets, graphite, and lead pencil notes all give way to a powerful, concentrated, beautifully pure Cabernet that has ultra-fine tannins, a seamless texture, building tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s another magical wine from this team that’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades.

97 POINTS - WINE ENTHUSIAST

95 POINTS - WINE ADVOCATE

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with 2% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec, is especially fresh and fruit-forward and stands apart in this vertical of Crown Point Cabernet. The medium-bodied palate is intense but lifted, silky and polished, with a long, layered finish.

2015 Crown Point Cabernet Sauvignon

97 POINTS - WINE ENTHUSIAST

This winery is focused on setting a new benchmark for what Cabernet Sauvignon from Santa Barbara can be, and this bottling is its best yet. Beautifully layered aromas of black cherry, baking spice, star anise and crushed slate lead into a roasted palate of black plum and chai spices, with acid that carries into the finish.

96+ POINTS - JEB DUNNUCK

The 100% varietal 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon was brought up in all new barrels as well, and it too as integrated its oak beautifully since I tasted it from barrel last year. It’s inky colored and has a sensationally pure bouquet of crème de cassis, graphite, toasted spices, and crushed rocks. Possessing a touch of St. Julien in its minerality and pure Cabernet Sauvignon character, this rich, full-bodied beauty has a stacked mid-palate, sweet tannin, and a great finish. It’s a brilliant wine and up with some of the best Cabernet Sauvignons to come from this region.

94 POINTS - WINE ADVOCATE

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller portions of Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot, the 2015 Estate Selection, from a low-yielding, concentrated vintage, is drinking beautifully now but still has plenty of life ahead. Medium ruby-purple in color, it has pure scents of blackcurrants with touches of violet, cigars and graphite. The full-bodied palate is seamless and detailed, with a flourish of savory accents and fantastic layering and length.

2014 Crown Point Cabernet Sauvignon

A deep, velvety purple color in the glass, this bottling by proprietor Roger Bower shows dark-chocolate-covered black cherries, fresh blackberry, white pepper, violet oil, port reduction sauce and spice sake on the lavish nose. Firm tannins frame the palate, which carries black currant and roasted lean beef flavors through soy and pepper sauce into a finish of caramel and espresso grinds.

96 POINTS - Jeb dunnuck

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 26 months in new French oak, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is unquestionably the finest vintage from this estate to date. It sports a deep, saturated purple color to go with flat out gorgeous notes of crème de cassis, lead pencil, spice and vanilla bean. Concentrated, broad and expansive, with ripe, polished tannin, it’s a big step up from the 2013 and up with the finest Bordeaux blends I’ve tasted from Santa Barbara County. Give it a few years to integrate its oak and enjoy bottles over the following two decades or more.

95 POINTS - WINE advocate

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (100%) is drinking beautifully now and has what it needs to continue to evolve in bottle over the next decade. Medium ruby-purple in color, it has pure aromatic nuances of dried herbs, lilac, iron, game meats and mint chocolate, and the palate explodes with plummy fruits. It’s silky, fresh and perfumed with fine minty, earthy tones on the long finish.

Extremely dense in the glass, this epic bottling offers lavish and penetrating aromas of black currant and elderberry jam on the nose alongside seared beef, chocolate cake and a pinch of violet. Expertly balanced, polished tannins make for a soft mouthfeel yet firm structure, carrying flavors of black fruit, chocolate and grilled figs that lead to an espresso note on the finish.

95 POINTS - jeb dunnuck

The 2014 Estate Selection incorporates smaller amounts of Malbec and Merlot and was also aged just over two years in new French oak. Its similarly inky colored, yet has a touch more freshness and purity in its leafy herbs, chocolaty dark fruits, graphite and mineral-laced aromas and flavors. Concentrated, structured and lengthy, with plenty of ripe tannin, it’s terrific today, in a youthful sort of way, but will be better with short term cellaring and keep for two decades.

2013 Crown Point Cabernet Sauvignon

96 POINTS - WINE ENTHUSIAST

Black as night in the glass, the wine delivers elegant aromas of olallieberry jam, baking spice, shaved chocolate, beef jerky, teriyaki and purple flowers. The sticky structure will age phenomenally, further concentrating flavors of coffee foam, soy-laced berry sauce, Asian pepper spice, and dense blueberry, black cassis and black plum fruit. Drink 2018-2033.

95+ POINTS - WINE ADVOCATE

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals slowly evolving crème de cassis, preserved plums and cigar box notes with a lovely earth and underbrush undercurrent plus notions of bay leaves and lavender. The medium-bodied palate offers lovely poise and is elegant yet intense, with plenty of youthful, muscular fruit supported by grainy tannins and finishing with a spring in its step. Give it another year or two in bottle and drink it over the next 15-20+.
